Audition Requirements for the 2021-2022 Season

Wind Band

Scale Requirements: B-flat major (2-Octave) and Chromatic Scale (1-Octave) – All scales should be performed at a Quarter Note = 120 (at a minimum)

Notation Knowledge: Sixteenth, eighth, quarter, half & whole notes, dotted rhythms, and time signatures 2/3, 3/4, 4/4, and 6/8.

Prepared Etude: One solo piece/etude (or 1 – 2 minute excerpt) that displays your best abilities. The piece should be suitable for for an advanced beginner to intermediate level player, or you may use this short excerpt as your solo piece.

Percussionist: Single stroke roll and flams on snare.

String Orchestra

Scale Requirements: Quarter Note = 120
Violin – G Major & D Major (2-Octave)
Viola – C Major & G Major (2-Octave)
Cello – C Major & G Major (2-Octave)
Bass – C Major & D Major (1-Octave)

Fundamental Requirements:
All Strings – First position notes on all 4 strings
Violins – Some basic 3rd position on the E string
Cellos – Some basic 2nd and 3rd position on the A string
Basses – Some basic 2nd and 3rd position on the G string (high C/D area)

Notation Knowledge: Eighth, quarter, half & whole notes, dotted rhythms and time signatures 4/4 & 3/4. All strings must be able to play 2-note slurs.

Prepared Etude: One solo piece/etude (or 1 – 2 minute excerpt) that displays your best abilities/ The piece should be suitable for an advanced beginner to intermediate level player, or you may use this short excerpt as your solo piece.

Symphony Orchestra

Scale Requirements:
• Quarter Note = 120
• Bowing/Articulation = two notes slurred, two staccato ascending; four notes slurred descending
Violin – G Major (3-Octave) and A Melodic Minor (3-Octave)
Viola – C Major (3-Octave) and D Melodic Minor (3-Octave)
Cello – C Major (3-Octave) and D Melodic Minor (3-Octave)
Bass – E Major (2-Octave) and F Melodic Minor (3-Octave)
Woodwinds – B Flat Major (2-Octave) and Chromatic Scale (1-Octave)
Brass – B Flat Major (2-Octave) and Chromatic Scale (1-Octave)

Prepared Etude: One solo piece/etude (or 2 – 3 minute excerpt) that displays your best abilities from repertoire at the intermediate level or above.
