Program & Media Manager
Agent of Social Change by day, Songwriter and Performer by night. Joe Hamm has devoted his career to social change through music guided by the El Sistema philosophy, as well as original composition and performance as a professional drumset player. Joe began working at the 4th El Sistema inspired program in the United States just two weeks after it began. Throughout his years at Soundscapes, he has collaborated closely with co-founders Executive Director Anne Henry and Program Director Rey Ramirez to design and implement program models, craft curriculum, guide teaching artistry, and create a safe and inspiring culture for children who may otherwise not have the opportunity to learn an instrument.
Constantly honing his craft as a professional musician, Joe performs and writes music for rock, indie rock, and jazz groups, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations such as alongside visual artists at the Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio. In 2008 Joe’s band Chasing Arrows was nominated for the Best Music On Campus MTV-U Woodie Award and appeared on the nationally televised award show, leading to a Manhattan-based management deal, being vigorously shopped to major record companies, and a 2009 independent release. Joe’s current jazz project, Junto, has reinvigorated Hampton Roads’ jazz scene and hosts monthly performances in Norfolk’s Arts District.
Joe’s home base is in Norfolk, Virginia with his wife Paige, where he enjoys riding boards and bikes, playing in the ocean with their black lab Luna, and socializing in coffee shops. Joe Hamm earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Christopher Newport University.
